ICONOCRASH, a solo exhibition by visual artist Matisse Mesnil. The exhibition closes the first cycle of 2022 residencies curated by Gate 44. Investigating the relationship between reality and representation, Matisse creates an environment made of 2D and 3D images where reality and fiction, the natural and the artificial, sometimes coincide and sometimes collide.

At the core of the French-Italian artist’s research during this residency is the causal link between raw matter—the printing matrix—and its counterpart idea, which is printed and reproduced to the point of mutation and collapse.

Thanks to the support of blacksmith Lorenzo Cerchierini and master printmaker Nicolas Muratore, the artist produced a body of work whose ample thematic range speaks through metal and paper about the meaning of representation and its modes of fruition.
