OUR APPROACH

Our workshops are dedicated to large-scale etching, screen printing, relief printing, lithography, photogravure, cyanotype, bookmaking and metalworking. We operate as a multidisciplinary space where traditional fine art printmaking techniques merge with experimental practices, encouraging dialogue and cross-contamination among different artistic languages.

OUR MISSION

We started off as artists, printmakers and creatives brought together by a passion for paper, art & design and print. However, in the context of a world where where images replace experience and mediate our social reality, we have gradually come to the conclusion that our central concern lies in understanding how visual experiences construct, reflect, and circulate meaning, identity, and so forth. Today, more than ever, we see printmaking and the print studio as critical spaces for cultural resistance for reclaiming agency, slowing down perception, reactivating critical engagement with the visual and bridge the divide between artistic practice, academic research, media theory, and technological experimentation.
We resist and fight the spectacle’s logic through visual cultural practices.

STAY GREEN

At Gate 44 we provide a safe and healthy environment. We aim to be as green and non-toxic as possible without compromising quality. For etching, we substitute solvents with VCA (vegetable cleaning agents) and nitric acid is strictly forbidden. We prefer zinc and copper sulfate to copper and ferric chloride and we incorporate more modern materials and techniques such as photopolymers and light- and water-based etching processes. For screen-printing we use high quality water-based inks and commercial soaps and degreasers. Water and trash are properly disposed of and recycled.
