Portfolio, Matisse Mesnil, SUTURA

“Sutura” by the artist Matisse Mesnil is the first solo exhibition in Italy presented by Gate 44 and Romero Paprocki Gallery from 12 March to 9 May 2026.

The exhibition brings together a body of works ranging from welded metal pieces to works on paper and site-specific installations.

Entirely developed during a six-month residency at Gate 44, Sutura reflects Mesnil’s ongoing investigation of key elements and recurring themes in his practice, while also engaging with new materials, supports, and image-making processes. This period of intensive experimentation, supported by close collaboration with Gate 44’s technical team of artisans, allowed the artist to expand and refine his visual language and technical toolkit.

Each stage of the process, from initial ideas to the precise technical realisation of each work, was shaped by a continuous exchange between the artist, the artisans, and the workshop’s equipment.

The exhibition is accompanied by a critical text by Milovan Farronato and Chiara Spagnol.
